Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle
History of the Estate:
The region of Valle d'Aosta has an ancient history of winemaking, even though the steep mountain slopes and harsh, cold climate might suggest otherwise. Historically however, wine production from the region was confined to individual "backyard vineyards" of usually no more than 2,500 square meters. It took the efforts of Father Don Bougeat, priest of Morgex until 1971, to help consolidate both the grape-growing efforts and wine production methods. In 1983, thanks in part to the efforts of the region's local government, these efforts were officially acknowledged and the Cooperative estate, Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, was born. This cooperative took control of its newly built winery, well-equipped with all the technology needed to produce high-quality fine wines and began producing the region's traditional wine varieties. These include the Blanc de Morgex grape (also known as Prie Blanc), a local variety which not only withstands the cold climate, but clings particularly well to the high, rocky mountain slopes. Within ten years the cooperative had doubled its production, using grapes cultivated high on the slopes of Mont Blanc at over 1200 meters (making these the highest vineyards in Europe), and additional fruits grown by local growers who make up part of the cooperative itself. These local growers are for the most part retired persons (with an average age of 75 years) who tend their vines as they would a garden, following specific guidelines set up by the cooperative itself.
Today the Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle produces over 140,000 bottles annually of 5 different traditional Valle D'Aosta wines. This unfailing commitment to the Valle D'Aosta wine-making has literally saved the region's history and culture from extinction, making these beautiful wines, and a part of Valle D'Aosta's culture, available for the first time to the rest of the world.
