Inspired by the recent international success of Bolgheri, wines from the coastal sector of Tuscany have risen rapidly in prestige to challenge the central hills for supremacy. In the heart of the Maremma, as the coastal hills of southwestern Tuscany are known, lie many DOC zones of promise, including Val di Cornia, Montecucco, Monteregio di Massa Marittima, Montescudaio, Capalbio and Sovana. The wines from these areas are also exciting by their presence of so many local varieties in their blends including Giacomino, Cannaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.
