Menhir
History of the Estate:

The Menhir winery is situated in the part of Puglia known as "Pezze delle Pere" and "Monte la Conca" or "Pieces of the Pear" and "Mount Conch". This tropical, sunny place is ideal for growing Puglia's autochthonous grapes, especially Primitivo and Negroamaro. The winery was started by three young winemakers, Gaetano Marangelli, Vito Marangelli and Marisa Loparco who oversee the production of many traditional wines with a passion for preserving for their local culture and techniques. Enologist Caterina Bellanova patiently crafts these spectacular wines out of a love for the land from which they are born. From the beginning the winery had a specific mission: to invest primarily in creating quality products that would help project the wines of Puglia, and Salento in particular, into the future. These truly artisanal products are full of their own distinct terroir which it is the winery's goal to preserve in all its integrity. Menhir is one of the only winemaking facility in Puglia to be officially recognized by the "Region of Puglia", meaning that they are recognized and admired for their commitment to regional production, indigenous grapes and preservation of local wine-making culture. As opposed to producing mass amounts of "blending wine" their mission is to create a viticultural identity for the region of Puglia. Even the name they chose for their winery, Menhir, means "Standing Stone" echoes these sentiments. The Menhir, primitive stone sculptures, are found all over Salento. The winemakers at Menhir liken themselves to these stone monoliths, proudly withstanding the test of time and their vines withstanding the onslaught of the elements. They are beacons marking Puglia's past, present and future.
Numero Zero is the first wine Menhir ever produced, its first release having been 2002.
