Durin
History of the Estate:
This Ligurian estate takes its name from the proprietor's grandfather, Isidoro Basso, whose friends and family had nicknamed in local dialect "Durin". The estate has been owned by the Basso family for many generations, and although it has always produced grapes and olive oil, it was not until the 1980's when current operator Antonio Basso decided to focus the efforts of the estate in fine wine production. He began to update the wine-making technologies and machines within the estate. Eventually with the help of his wife Laura, Antonio was able to eventually turn back in time and recuperate traditional grape varieties and local flavors which were becoming obscured by larger, mass-producing estates. The Ligurian wine-making traditions are strong and deserve to be fully explored with the addition of modern wine-making technologies. This is the philosophy from which many of their aromatic whites and supple olive oils are born. Niche wines like Pigato and Granaccia have begun to attract international attention and are helping to preserve Liguria's colorful winemaking traditions for future generations.
